Yale / American Psychiatric Association Toronto Meeting: "Yale Psychiatry Reception"

2015 Distinguished Alumni Award Honoree:

Jack D. Barchas, M.D.
Jack Barchas is Barklie McKee Henry Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, and Psychiatrist-in-Chief, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

After Pomona College and research at UCLA, he attended Yale, which stimulated his interests in neuroscience and policy. He showed that stress differentially changes neurotransmitters; melatonin is a hormone; and little time is spent talking to patients on medical rounds.

At Stanford he became the Nancy Pritzker Professor and for 25 years dedicated his life to research. The Pritzker Laboratory studied neuroregulators, including identification, localization, metabolism, molecular biology and roles. He later was UCLA’s neuroscience dean.

At Cornell, Dr. Barchas chairs a unique department which combines major collaborative clinical-educational-research programs. It covers infancy through geriatrics developmentally, including multiple integrated neurobiological and behavioral approaches in humans and animals.  Leadership positions have been in the APA, Institute of Medicine, N.Y. Academy of Medicine, NARSAD, Pritzker Depression Network, ARNMD, and Pasarow Foundation, as well as editing the Archives of General Psychiatry.  Among honors have been the Bennett and Lifetime Achievement Awards, Society Biological Psychiatry; Sarnat Prize in Mental Health and McDermott Award for Extraordinary Service, IOM; Research Award and Distinguished Service Award, APA; and Honorary Membership, American Psychoanalytic Association.
