Tips for designing an effective Graphical Abstract - P2P Teaching, Season 3 (In-Person)

Registration is required. Click here to register.

Welcome to the third season of our Peer-to-Peer Teaching sessions. These are taught by our own community members to fill knowledge gaps and keep up with the accelerated pace at which bioinformatics grows. This season we are pleased to announce sessions covering * Image analysis methodologies (imageJ and QuPath) * Omics analysis in R and/or Python * Biomedical Data analysis using the clusters * Statistical analysis software (Prism) *Science communication.

This session on "Tips for designing an effective graphical abstract" was designed and will be delivered by Caterina Di Pietro, PhD from the Bruscia Lab, Department of Pediatrics (Respiratory) in the Yale School of Medicine.

Summary:

Journals are increasingly requesting the submission of a “graphical” or “visual abstract” alongside the body of the article. Graphical abstracts in online publications are commonplace for information dissemination. They are often the first vehicle of new research information, largely due to the popularity of social media platforms and their reliance on striking visuals. In this session, you will be guided through logical steps that will help you summarize your research in an easy-to-understand image. We will focus on graphical design principles such as aesthetics, illustration style or rendering technique, and color palette, which are essential qualities that determine the successful communication of your main scientific message.

This workshop is designed for:

Biomedical researchers interested in learning the basic principles of visual science communication.

You will learn how to:

  • Choose the right composition
  • Choose the right color palette
  • Use colors functionally
  • Use rendering technique for emphasis
  • Use layout and design principles for emphasis
  • Distinguish elements with visual characteristic
