SEICHE Center's for Health & Justice Seminar Series: Policing & Health (Dr. Lisa Bowleg)

On December 8th, 12 - 1:30 PM, the SEICHE Center for Health and Justice at Yale University will host Dr. Lisa Bowleg for our Fall seminar series on policing and health. The title of Dr. Bowleg's presentation will be: "Unemployment, Incarceration and Police Brutality: What I've Learned About Intersectionality and Structural Inequality from My HIV Prevention Research with U.S. Black Men."

Lisa Bowleg, Ph.D. is Professor of Applied Social Psychology in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at The George Washington University (GW), and Director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Core of the DC Center for AIDS Research (DC CFAR). She is also the Founding Director of two new intersectionality institutes that will launch in Fall 2021: the Intersectionality Research Institute at GW, and the Intersectionality Training Institute, an independent institute focused on providing training and workshops on the application of intersectionality to research (qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods), policy and practice. She is a leading scholar of the application of intersectionality to social and behavioral science research. Informed by critical frameworks such as intersectionality and critical race theory, her mixed methods research examines the effects of social-structural stressors (e.g., unemployment, police brutality, incarceration), intersectional stigma and discrimination, and protective factors (e.g., resilience, religiosity and spirituality, social support) on HIV risk, substance use, and mental and physical health outcomes in diverse Black communities such as heterosexual men, and lesbian, gay and bisexual people. She has served as a principal investigator of five U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies. She is an associate editor of the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) and the editor of AJPH’s Perspectives from the Social Sciences section.
