36th Annual Therese Dondero Memorial Lecture

Barry S. Levy, M.D., M.P.H. Adjunct Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine & Past President,
American Public Health Association

Dr. Levy authored the 1971 American Journal of OBGYN research report showing that midwifery services led to the improved neonatal mortality and prenatal care uptake observed in California’s Madera County Project (1961-1963). A classic natural experiment analysis of midwifery care.

A Tribute to Armentia Tripp Jarrett, CNM, MN, FACNM (1917-2014); Yale SON, Class of ’59

Ms. Jarrett served as the senior midwife in the Madera County Project, supervising the care
provided during the pilot demonstration. In 1992, she received the ACNM Hattie Hemschemeyer Award (now the Lifetime Visionary Award), becoming the first Black midwife to receive that honor.
