DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW The burden of hypertension among persons living with
HIV (PLHIV) is increasing in Uganda with the aging of the population of P
LHIV and changes in diet\, lifestyle\, and work patterns. Our research fo
cuses on integrating hypertension and HIV care by characterizing current
care delivery patterns and gaps in implementing best practices in diagnos
ing and treating hypertension among PLHIV. We also use quantitative metho
ds to describe these practices in the form of quality of care cascades\,
and qualitative methods to understand barriers and facilitators of high q
uality management of hypertension as part of HIV care. Recently\, we used
implementation science methods to adapt the WHO HEARTS protocol to integ
rate screening and treatment of hypertension into HIV care at a large HIV
clinic in Uganda. We will present our data on the effectiveness of this
protocol in achieving hypertension control\, as well as data on the imple
mentation outcomes of the adapted WHO HEARTS implementation strategy amon
g hypertensive PLHIV. These results guided the Uganda Ministry of Health
to revise national guidelines for integrated management of HIV and non-co
mmunicable diseases. Additionally\, we will present our next steps to use
implementation science methods to integrate the management of hypertensi
