DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Little empirical guidance exists for planning adequa
tely powered functional neuroimaging studies. An underappreciated barrier
is that commonly reported effect sizes across the brain do not account f
or sampling error\, inflating expectations. In this talk we introduce a m
eta-analytic variance decomposition method that accounts for sampling err
or to estimate the true mass univariate distribution of effects and estab
lish benchmarks in a mega-analysis of 63 studies across seven datasets (5
2\,979 participants). We discuss how small effects across the brain can b
e improved with multivariate and task-based analyses\, that studies plann
ed using uncorrected effects are typically half as powerful as expected\,
and how this work lays the groundwork for more empirically informed powe
r analyses and study planning in fMRI. Bio: Dr. Stephanie Noble is an Ass
istant Professor in the Department of Psychology\, Department of Bioengin
eering\, and Center for Cognitive and Brain Health at Northeastern Univer
sity\, where she directs the NeuroPRISM lab. She received her BS in Chemi
cal & Biological Engineering from Princeton\, her PhD in the Interdepartm
ental Neuroscience Program at Yale\, and postdoctoral training in Radiolo
gy & Biomedical Imaging at Yale\, in addition to entrepreneurship experie
nces outside academia. Her lab develops tools for more precise neuroimagi
ng statistical inference and prediction\, with the goal of improving repr
oducibility and enabling personalized predictions of disease and developm
