Tucked into the basement of the Hope Building at the corner of Congress Avenue and Cedar Street is a warren of well-lit rooms filled with milling machines, table saws, welders and lathes. The Machine Shop has catered to medical school researchers for more than three decades, building prototype devices for use in experiments.

Custom Machining

The Machine Shop provides custom machining for Yale and the local community. A skilled machinist, Tony DeSimone can work with you to help conceptualize and diagram your need and then create a custom solution. The machine shop specializes in both metal and plastic machining and fabrication services. Examples of custom work include:

  • Cold/hot plates (to custom specifications)
  • Custom tracheal button/plugs
  • Flow cytometer - kinetics unit
  • Localizers for irradiation of biological samples
  • Metabolic cages

Additional Services

In addition to custom machining services, we loan tools to faculty, staff, and students. We also keep a wide variety of spare parts and supplies in stock, which are available for purchase.

Tools for loan

The Shop is fully equipped with small hand tools and power tools which can be borrowed by personnel in the Yale medical community. The equipment is signed out (name, department, telephone number & valid Yale ID) and is expected to be returned the next working day.

  • Tony DeSimone

    Research Support Specialist Yale School of Medicine Support Services

    Tony DeSimone has been in the manufacturing trade since 1979. He has worked on several commercial and government projects, including hydraulic controlled components on civilian and military aircraft, electronics hardware, automotive prototypes, and machine fixture and tooling. He brings over 40 years of accumulated experience to the service of scientists, researchers and students at the Yale School of Medicine.
