Ultrasound & Echocardiography

On a weekly basis, thousands of patients presenting to EDs receive unnecessary computed tomography (CT) scans known to have adverse health outcomes including death when, at times, an alternative diagnostic technique such as ultrasound would suffice. Beyond the health implications, CTs are placing a significant burden on the health care system and accounting for 23% of Medicare expenditures. Ground-breaking research conducted in the Yale ED is aimed at identifying unnecessary irradiation of patients to improve practice and health outcomes for patients.
