Biography

Dr. Melnick completed his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and his emergency medicine residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Melnick's research focuses on improving EHR usability as a means to achieve the quadruple aim to improve healthcare delivery. Dr. Melnick began work in April 2018 on a UG3 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the EMBED trial (Pragmatic trial of user-centered clinical decision support to implement EMergency department-initiated BuprenorphinE for opioid use Disorder). This trial will leverage cutting edge health IT innovations and user-centered design so that the intervention can deliver treatment to individuals suffering from opioid use disorder within the emergency department context. Dr. Melnick recently completed a five year K08 award with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. This project identified non-clinical, human factors that promote or inhibit the appropriate use of CT imaging in patients with minor head injury. These factors informed the design, development, and pilot implementation of a patient- and clinician-facing tablet computer app, called Concussion or Brain Bleed, that integrates a patient decision aid and clinician decision support at the bedside to engage and educate minor head injury patients and identify and address their concerns. The findings from this study were presented as a plenary paper at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting.
