Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
Alcohol and Other Drug Problems
Through our efforts in this area, we are developing behavioral treatments for patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) who abuse drugs and engage in hazardous drinking. This area is of particular significance to EM as substance abuse problems are a leading cause of preventable illness and injury, and represent a substantial portion of the 120 million Emergency Department (ED) visits each year.
An innovative new line of research at the Yale Department of Emergency Medicine focuses on the development of ED-initiated screening, brief intervention, and referral to treat patients who smoke. Efficacy studies of multicomponent cessation interventions involve motivational interviewing and medication to help adult smokers in the ED.
