David Della-Giustina, MD, FACEP, FAWM, professor of emergency medicine and program director of emergency medicine residency, was recently honored with The Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The Courage to Teach Award recognizes program directors who find innovative ways to teach residents, are strong role models and provide quality healthcare while remaining connected to the initial impulse to care for others in this environment—bringing both intellect and heart to the dual vocations of being a teacher and physician.

A retired Colonel from the US Army with more than 29 years of service, including combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq with the United States Special Operations Command, Della-Giustina is highly respected educator in the areas of resident training, emergency orthopedics, point-of-care ultrasound and military/combat medicine. Internationally renowned as a leader in Wilderness Medicine education and healthcare in austere environments and is recognized as one of the primary architects of a new Wilderness Medicine education course, “Advanced Wilderness Life Support”.

In addition to his role as Residency Program Director, Della-Giustina serves as Chief of the Education Section, Program Director of our Educational Leadership Fellowship, and Program Director of our Wilderness Medicine Fellowship. “We are highly honored that Dr. Della-Giustina was recognized for this prestigious award”, said Deportment of Emergency Medicine Chair Gail D’Onofrio, MD. “It is a reflection of his outstanding commitment to emergency medicine medical student education.”

During his tenure at Yale, Della-Giustina’s direction and leadership have elevated our residency program to national prominence. According to a recent graduate, “Every day when I walk into a shift I try to emulate him. His practice style has forever shaped my own. He has inspired all of us to be the best we can and to constantly push our own boundaries. Thanks to him, our residents have become national leaders, astute clinicians, and dedicated educators.”

Della-Giustina’s receipt of the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach award was announced at the 2019 ACGME Annual Educational Conference on March 8th.
