Nora D. Volkow, MD, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse meets with Yale-DAHRS Scholars

On Friday, October 5, Scholars representing the Yale-Drug use, Addiction and HIV Research Scholars (DAHRS) program were fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with Nora D. Volkow, MD, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. Volkow was on campus to present the keynote address for the Department of Anesthesiology’s Third Annual Research Retreat. Her presentation focused on the National Institutes of Health’s perspectives on “Science Strategies to Address the Opioid Crisis.”

The NIDA funded Scholars represent the fields of Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pulmonary/Critical Care. “As an Emergency Medicine Physician in New Haven, a community hard hit by the opioid overdose epidemic, it was an honor to meet with Dr. Volkow and to discuss innovative solutions to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with opioid use disorders,” says former DAHRS Scholar Kathryn Hawk, MD, MHS. "Dr. Volkow closed her informative and powerful lecture with the charge to embrace science to address this crisis. She accentuated the urgency of our task, reminding us that in the past hour, eight people in the United States had lost their lives to overdose.”

The Yale-DAHRS program provides a comprehensive, post-doctorate, interdisciplinary, mentored career development program designed to prepare investigators for careers focusing on improving medical outcomes for patients with, and at risk for, drug use, addiction and HIV, by integrating prevention and treatment in general medical settings.
