EMS Faculty

David C. Cone, MD , is the fellowship director and Chief of the Section of EMS, holding the academic rank of Professor in emergency medicine. An active field provider since 1984, he has served as Medical Team Manager for two Urban Search & Rescue Task Forces, and is the Chief at the North Madison Volunteer Fire Company. He is also service chief of the only physician response team in Connecticut, the New Haven Sponsor Hospital Area Response Physician (SHARP) Team. He served as President of NAEMSP in 2007 and 2008, and as Editor-in-Chief of the fourth and fifth editions of NAEMPS's textbook, Emergency Medical Services: Clinical Practice and Systems Oversight, published in January 2009 and due out in January 2015, respectively. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Academic Emergency Medicine, and chair of the Council of EMS Fellowship Directors. He is certified in EMS by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Sandy Bogucki, MD PhD , holds the academic rank of Professor, and is director of Yale’s fire research program, a multi-center consortium that works on research and development of technologies to enhance the safety and effectiveness of fire fighters, technical rescue personnel, and other responders. Her research interests also include detection technologies for environmental hazards and weaponized biologicals and chemicals. She has served on the boards of both NAEMSP and NREMT. She took a leave to work in Washington as the Senior Medical Advisor to the Office of Preparedness and Emergency Response, US Department of Health and Human Services, and returned to Yale in the summer of 2008. She has subsequently assumed the role of both Director and Medical Director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Center for EMS, the local EMS medical oversight authority.

Ryan Coughlin, MD, joined the faculty in 2017 after completing his EMS fellowship training here at Yale. He coordinates resident education for the Section, and serves as Associate Medical Director for field operations.

Daniel Joseph, MD, joined the faculty in 2018 after completing his EMS fellowship training at Denver Health. He is the Paramedic Field Instructor Medial Director and also serves on the faculty of the wilderness medicine fellowship program.

Anthony Tomassoni, MD, MS , is the medical director of the Yale-New Haven Health System's Office of Emergency Preparedness. Tony is board-certified in toxicology and has research interests in hazardous materials and disaster management.

Mark Cicero, MD , is the Associate Medical Director for Pediatrics, and is triple-boarded in pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and EMS. His research focuses on pediatric triage in mass casualty incidents.

Kevin Burns, PA-C EMT-P , joined the Section in 2003. He worked for a number of years as a paramedic in Rockland County, NY before joining the clinical staff at the YNHH ED. He is currently serving as the hospital’s EMS Coordinator, in charge of EMS quality improvement efforts.

Don MacMillan, MA, PA-C, EMT-P , serves as Section faculty (Lecturer) and is the Flight Operations Manager for SkyHealth. He is a certified Hazardous Materials Technician, and is the past chief for the North Madison Volunteer Fire Company. A retired lieutenant commander in the US Naval Reserve, he received his Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College at Newport, RI, and has completed two tours of duty in Iraq.

Denamarie Blancato is the fellowship program coordinator, and a senior administrative assistant in the department.
