Yale Mentor- Dr. Guillermo Valdé

Yale University has a growing relationship with the Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec), which began in 2005 and has further expanded through various educational opportunities across the Yale and Tec campuses. Tec is one of the largest and most well-respected educational institutions in Mexico.

One of our newer additions to the YSM international clinical elective sites, students will have the opportunity to spend a four week clinical rotation in Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán, located on the southeastern end of México, less than 50 km from the Gulf of México. Yucatán borders with the state of Quintana Roo to the east, Campeche to the west, and the Gulf of México to the North. A second site option for students, who wish to be at one of the Tec campuses, will be Guadalajara. In Guadalajara, students will have the opportunity to rotate with Tec students at one of five hospitals.

Clinical Responsibilities

Clinical rotation options are available depending on the student’s particular interests. Students are required to have an intermediate level of fluency in Spanish as rounds and daily activities will be conducted in Spanish. The services available to Yale Students rotating at Clínica de Mérida include Primary Care, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology. For those students interested in Guadalajara, services include Radiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, or Dermatology.
