April 03, 2020

Richard Pierce, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics (critical care) has received a 2019 Individual Biomedical Research Award from The Hartwell Foundation for his study Catalyzing Bronchiolitis Therapeutics Through Immune Response Profiling. Pierce is one of 12 recipients of the award from 11 institutions. Each awardee receives three years of research support amounting to $100,000 per year. The honor for Pierce also funds a $50,000 Hartwell Fellowship at Yale for each of two years to support an early-career postdoctoral researcher.

Pierce, who calls the award a “great honor,” said, “This generous support will allow me to conduct high risk investigations into new therapies for critically ill children with viral induced lung injury. I am also excited to be included in a group of like-minded established investigators focused on improving the health of children.”

The foundation’s president, Frederick A. Dombrose, PhD, said, “The Hartwell Foundation seeks to inspire innovation by offering individual researchers an opportunity to realize their professional goals. Our approach is to be unique, selective, thorough and accountable. We provide an opportunity for those we support to make a difference and to realize their hopes and dreams."
