- 00:33Graduate medical education at Yale
- 00:34isn't better than the only Haven
- 00:36Medical Center comprised of Young Haven
- 00:39Hospital and Yale School of Medicine.
- 00:41We have over 1500 beds.
- 00:42We are also one of the largest graduate
- 00:45medical education communities in the country,
- 00:47both in terms of number of
- 00:49programs and number of trainees
- 00:51at the resident and fellow level.
- 00:53One of our unique strengths is
- 00:55the physical proximity of Yale
- 00:56School of Medicine with Yale,
- 00:58New Haven Hospital.
- 00:59Essentially sharing the same campus.
- 01:01This means that not only during your
- 01:03clinical training in the operating rooms,
- 01:06in the ICU, on the wards,
- 01:08in our outpatient practices will you
- 01:10be working with physicians who are
- 01:12clinical leaders in their fields.
- 01:14It also means that during your
- 01:16residency and fellowship,
- 01:17when you pursue research,
- 01:18you will be right down the
- 01:20street working with individuals
- 01:22who are pursuing scholarship in any
- 01:24area that you could imagine.
- 01:26And these are international leaders.
- 01:29Do you mind pulling over
- 01:31the lie rads criteria? I
- 01:32have it open. What's
- 01:34the size? What
- 01:35immediately struck me?
- 01:36Walking through the hospital for
- 01:38my interview was looking at all
- 01:40of the people in the hallway and
- 01:42them smiling back at Leanne. I felt
- 01:44like a member of the team already
- 01:46after looking at many other programs
- 01:48I settled on yell because it just
- 01:50really had such a great, nurturing,
- 01:52supportive environment from the program.
- 01:54Leadership to the other residents.
- 01:55The staff here I just really felt at
- 01:58home also during residency I wanted to see.
- 02:01Diversity of pathology.
- 02:02The only Haven is the only hospital
- 02:04in a very wide radius and services
- 02:06a large catchment area and that made
- 02:08a big difference in my training.
- 02:14I'm really excited about that meeting
- 02:16and I was hoping during the next
- 02:18Metro meeting we could talk about a
- 02:20welcoming reception for the new interns.
- 02:22From the moment I stepped in
- 02:24to go New Haven hospital,
- 02:26it was immediately apparent that
- 02:27this is an institution that cares
- 02:29about diversity and inclusion. Less
- 02:30than 6% of doctors or African
- 02:32American and less than two point.
- 02:345% of doctors are black males
- 02:35and they all New Haven Hospital
- 02:37understands this and makes it a
- 02:39priority to recruit underrepresented
- 02:40minorities to their programs.
- 02:42One of the great things
- 02:43about training at Yale.
- 02:45In terms of gender,
- 02:46diversity and gender bias,
- 02:48is that we have so many women in
- 02:50prominent leadership positions?
- 02:52Department chairs,
- 02:52an program directores to provide you
- 02:55with mentor ship here as a trainee.
- 03:02Anyone have any additional
- 03:03agenda items for today?
- 03:05I actually do have one perfect so I
- 03:08wanted to bring up the email with mqo.
- 03:11the Senate is a body that represents
- 03:13the graduate medical education,
- 03:15which are the residents and fellows
- 03:18and the goal of it is to create.
- 03:21The best possible training environment
- 03:23in the nation here at Yale. I really
- 03:25enjoyed being a part of the Senate.
- 03:27It's giving me the opportunity to
- 03:29meet residents and fellows from
- 03:30different programs and also to feel
- 03:32like I've been having an active role
- 03:34in creating the best possible learning
- 03:49Dealing with the covid crisis has
- 03:51been the most difficult challenge I
- 03:54think we've faced for this institution
- 03:56and for the training program.
- 03:58This was really learning to live
- 04:01with moment to moment uncertainty.
- 04:03What we did is we
- 04:05pulled the residents back
- 04:07to the areas where they.
- 04:09Were the most comfortable and that
- 04:11included internal medicine residents
- 04:12going out of the edian back up
- 04:13towards in the ICU and the emergency
- 04:15medicine residents coming back to
- 04:16the Ed so they are able to take care
- 04:18of the patients that they knew how
- 04:20to take care of best in this setting
- 04:22that they were most comfortable
- 04:23and where they were most trained.
- 04:25And so it really allowed us to
- 04:27make sure that we provide the best
- 04:28care for the patients and provided
- 04:30the best safety for residents.
- 04:31We were never asked to go into patient
- 04:33rooms more than we absolutely had to,
- 04:35and the attendings that worked with
- 04:37us during the covid crisis really.
- 04:39Advocated for us in that sense to not expose
- 04:41us more than was absolutely necessary.
- 04:49I've been here in New Haven for 17 years.
- 04:52Ann. I wouldn't live or work anywhere else.
- 04:55I think New Haven offers everything
- 04:57that a big city has just on
- 05:00a little bit smaller scale.
- 05:02We have sports, we have art,
- 05:04we have great food.
- 05:06Just walked down Chapel St Ann,
- 05:08you see all of the restaurants,
- 05:10the shopping, the coffee shops,
- 05:12people on the St Ann,
- 05:14there's Wooster Square with the.
- 05:16World famous pizza.
- 05:17Italian restaurant and the
- 05:19Wooster Square farmers market.
- 05:20Being here in New Haven means being
- 05:23part of the Yale University community.
- 05:26You have access to a huge variety
- 05:28of both extra curricular and
- 05:30professional opportunities.
- 05:32University has its own theater,
- 05:34its own art Gallery and a
- 05:36short distance from New Haven.
- 05:38You can take advantage of nature
- 05:41and be on the beaches or on hiking
- 05:44or biking trails and also it's.
- 05:47Pretty easy to get to some of the major
- 05:51Metropolitan centers of the Northeast,
- 05:53so all of these smaller scale
- 05:55things are right at your doorstep.
- 05:58An available, particularly as a resident.
- 06:05Yellow havens Jimmy
- 06:06programs offer world class training
- 06:08at a world class institution. If
- 06:10you're looking for great support,
- 06:12place where you feel like
- 06:14family and also where you
- 06:16would get great training.
- 06:17I recommend you come to Yale
- 06:20when you're thinking about
- 06:21residency and how tough
- 06:23is going to
- 06:24be the long
- 06:25nights you really want to place where
- 06:27the people were nice and friendly and
- 06:30will support you throughout the way.
- 06:32If I had to choose a residency program again,
- 06:34I would choose yell every time.
