Compensation

Yale offers highly completive benefits to its trainees. For 2019-2020, the average (PGY4) radiology trainee was provided a salary of $76K. The range for all trainee years was: $69K (PGY2) - $82K (PGY6). In view of the affordable Greater New Haven area, this provides an excellent standard of living.

For comparison, a trainee would have to earn $145K in New York City, $125K in Boston, and $211K in San Francisco to afford the same standard of living according to Best Places to Live. In this context, Yale’s benefits are unparalleled among major academic centers.

Numerous moonlighting opportunities further enhance the earning potential of residents at Yale Radiology. Compensation is similarly competitive. Each resident is offered a performance bonus (approximately $900 in 2018-2019) by the hospital, for their ongoing contribution to patient care.

Expenses

Residents are provided an annual fund for books, conference attendance, and other academic expenses. In 2019-2020, the yearly fund was $1,400. Residents are also afforded yearly reimbursement for wellness activities, as well as additional funds for board-prep materials up to $450.

Residents who present research at national meetings are reimbursed for their travel and expenses at highly competitive rates. Residents are supported at $500 for each poster/presentation, $1000 for oral presentations, and up to $1500 for presentations listed in meeting brochures. There is no cap for total reimbursement per meeting. Residents are also funded by national organizations and industrial partners, such as Amersham and Bracco. Trainees at Yale have won substantial financial support from both institutional and external sources.

All residents attend the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) course in Washington, D.C. The department pays tuition and residents are provided an allowance of $2,000 for living and travel expenses.

Chief Residents are given subsidies to attend two national conferences, typically RSNA and AUR. Chief Residents are also provided additional stipends and educational funds to support their administrative duties.

Vacation

Residents are afforded 4 weeks of vacation per year. Coverage of all major holidays is shared among the large residency, so that most are free from clinical duties. Call is similarly well distributed.

The radiology residency program also offers a unique and highly flexible vacation policy; vacation may be scheduled for nearly at any point in the year, from discrete days to multiple weeks at a time, on a rolling basis. This provides incredible customizability for trainees and facilitates travel as well as engagement in special interests and family commitments.
