Research Summary
As a clinician-educator, Dr. Spelman's academic work focuses on quality improvement in health care delivery to military veterans.
Extensive Research Description
Dr. Spelman's focus has been on optimizing primary care delivery to veterans, using a population health approach. Recent quality improvement projects include improving rates of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, transition to virtual care as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, integration of treatment of opioid use disorder into primary care settings, optimization of specialty consultation templates, and establishing group visits in primary care for naloxone education in high risk veterans. Each of these projects capitalizes on existing data sets within the VA EHR to construct a population health intervention that can be used by primary care teams to enhance health care delivery.
Additionally, her academic work has focused on improving care to the new generation of Veterans from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. She has lectured broadly on this subject, has authored multiple chapters in the Yale Office Based Medical Curriculum aimed at educating health trainees about the specific health concerns of veterans (including depression, PTS, mild TBI/concussion, and general care of veterans), and her practical narrative review on the subject of post deployment care has reached a broad audience (with over 13k accesses and 101 citations).
