Research Summary

My research focuses on the intersection of emotional intelligence, school-based creativity, and well-being in adolescents. This takes several forms. First, I am a co-developer of two approaches to social emotional learning in secondary schools: the RULER approach (rulerapproach.org), and inspirED (inspiredstudents.org). In addition to the programmatic development, I lead the research (both basic and applied) that supports these programs including their impact on student emotion skills and creative problem solving. Following my passion for school-baed assessment, I also work on the development of several new tools that support students and educators in making data-informed decisions around their SEL implementation and tracking their success. These tools include a measure of school climate (the School Climate Walkthrough), the Momentary Emotion Assessment tool (MEA), and the Student Emotion Regulation Assessment (SERA).
