The Yale Dermatology Residency won first place at this year's Dermpath Bowl, a national dermatopathology skills contest that occurs during the 2025 AAD Annual Meeting, the world's largest dermatology meeting. The meeting was held from March 7-11 in Orlando, Fla.
Throughout the contest, 48 residency programs compete over the course of two days in a head-to-head challenge over diagnosing histopathology cases. Teams compete in an elimination-style contest where winners advance each round until there is a single victor crowned the champion. Yale has won the esteemed competition twice, in 2009 and 2010, respectively, and secured its third victory in the 17th edition in 2025. The 2025 team was led by senior residents Alana Deutsch, MD; Ailish Hanly, MD; Rebecca Fine, MD; and Margaret MacGibeney, MD, PhD, with tremendous effort and contributions from the first-year and second-year residents.
Additionally, Yale Dermatopathology Fellow Noel Turner, MD, MHS, won first place in the International Society of Dermatopathology (ISDP) Bowl for Trainees, held during the ISDP meeting in Orlando, Fla. from March 5-6.
The success of its trainees in such competitions is a result of Yale Dermatology's continued commitment to providing a world-class training environment and superb mentorship opportunities not only through its dermatopathology program, but also its innovative residency and fellowships. Prepared by Yale Dermatology's rigorous clinical training and mentorship, alumni have gone on to pursue fellowship training at world-renowned institutions, as well as secure prestigious careers in academic medicine and private practices.
