Childs, Cortes-Briones Awarded Grants at Yale Innovation Summit

June 06, 2023

Amber Childs, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, and Jose Cortes-Briones, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, were presented with Blavatnik Accelerator Awards at the 2023 Yale Innovation Summit on June 1.

The Yale Innovation Summit is the northeast’s biggest gathering of entrepreneurs, investors, and creators. Five tracks across the arts, biotech, climate, health, and technology form the core programming for two days of inspiring conversations, pitch contests, workshops, performances, keynotes and awards.

Childs and Cortes-Briones were awarded Digital Health Accelerator Awards supported by The Blavatnik Fund for Innovation at Yale. The awards support Yale faculty in the commercialization of biomedical and digital health innovations.

Childs was honored for M-Select, a cutting-edge, comprehensive digital mental health solution that leverages the power of Measurement-Based Care to provide teenagers with data-driven, evidence-based e-treatment.

M-Select uses data to accelerate mental health support for teenagers by delivering treatment, enhance behavioral health quality by providing data-driven clinical decision support for providers, and keep caregivers connected by providing parents data-driven psychoeducation and insights to best support their youth.

Cortes-Briones and Emily Lee, MD, instructor in the Yale the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, developed the first noninvasive fetal electroencephalogram (fEEG). This device, which measures fetal brain activity via electrodes attached to the maternal abdomen, employs artificial intelligence and signal processing techniques to reconstruct fetal brain activity from signals collected on the mother's abdomen.

Cortes-Briones and Lee have submitted a provisional patent application through Yale Ventures and are currently seeking National Institutes of Health funding for a validation study involving a population with a broad range of BMIs.
