Amanda Calhoun, MD, MPH, a Yale Psychiatry resident in the Albert J. Solnit Integrated Adult/Child Psychiatry program, will become an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents’ Journal.
Calhoun said while being a writer is powerful, being an editor will give her the power to shift the narrative of what — and who — gets published. Editorial boards decide which articles and voices even make it to the press, and "these boards have historically (and currently) been quite homogeneous in their representation," she said.
“As an African American woman, I have read amazing pieces that I feel are not included in journals because they talk about topics that folks may be uncomfortable publishing, like issues pertaining to racism, sexism, and all of those ‘-isms’ that have become scary words in society. If we don't write about them and talk about them, we have no hopes of rectifying them.”
My goal as an editor is to uplift the voices of residents, especially those representing the voices of marginalized communities. It is time that we started hearing their voices, too.

The Psychiatry Residents’ Journal is published online monthly with The American Journal of Psychiatry. It provides a forum for trainees, including medical students, residents, and fellows, to share ideas and experiences in clinical practice, research, and careers with colleagues.
