Smith advises Sesame Street on parent-child trauma

October 10, 2017

Megan V. Smith, DrPH, MPH, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and in the Child Study Center, and Director of the Mental health Outreach for MotherS (MOMS) Partnership, advised Sesame Street on parent-child trauma when the television series created a website to help families cope with traumatic experiences.

Videos, articles and other related activities on the site offer instruction to parents about helping children cope with and recover from trauma.

According to the site, "When a child endures a traumatic experience, the whole family feels the impact. But adults hold the power to help lessen its effects. Several factors can change the course of kids' lives: feeling seen and heard by a caring adult, being patiently taught coping strategies and resilience-building techniques, and being with adults who know about the effects of such experiences."

Smith was among the expert advisers who helped Sesame Street develop the resource for parents and communities.
