"Cultural Competency With Diverse Socio-Political Values"
Sociopolitical values play an important and often under-examined role in shaping clinical research, training, and psychotherapeutic practice. The focus on cultural competency has expanded in recent years, with the noble goal of improving care for populations that have been marginalized due to race, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, and other causes—but unfortunately socio-political values have often been overlooked. Socio-political issues are often deeply felt, emotionally charged, and controversial—making them both clinically important and also challenging for clients and therapists. This talk will examine these issues and discuss ways treatment related to these issues could potentially be improved.
