Session Description

Poetry, Friendship, and Parenting at the Edge of Intimacy and Mental Health

Elizabeth Metzger, MFA, will give a thirty minute talk exploring Max Ritvo's poetry confronting mortality, her anticipatory grief and "becoming" Max in poetry, poetry and the nonverbal relationship of mother/child, and poetry's role in parenting through her child's regression. The talk will be followed by a reading of Ritvo's poems and Metzger's own poems related to him and her son.

The objectives of this session are to consider:

• The relational power of poetry
• The use of poetry at the edges of language and experience: illness and dying; friendship and grief; parenthood and the developing minds of children

Continuing Education

This session is approved for Continuing Education Credit (CEC) by the National Association of Social Workers, CT and meets the continuing education criteria for Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapist, Professional Counselor, and Licensed Psychologist Licensure renewal. YCSC Grand Rounds are reviewed for eligibility for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits on an annual basis and most lecture-style sessions are approved for the year. Yale School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Established in memoriam to explore the interface between the arts and child/adolescent mental health, the multidisciplinary Max Ritvo ‘13 and Alan B. Slifka ‘51 Program for the Medical Humanities aims to improve the clinical experience of those affected by illness and strengthen the ability of providers to deliver compassionate care. It includes guest speaker and visiting scholar components, as well as culminating special lectures each spring.

YCSC Grand Rounds sessions are typically presented in the Cohen Auditorium at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays from September through June, with a live stream available via Zoom. Internal participants are encouraged to attend sessions in person.
