Yale Child Study Center Community Workshop

All Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) faculty, staff, and trainees are invited to a workshop with Dorothy E. Holmes, PhD, who is a supervising analyst as well as a teaching and training analyst emerita at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas. She is consulting with YSM the next day and generously fit this time into her travel day for the YCSC community.

This workshop is based on the paper titled “Marianne Goldberger: A Mold-breaking Psychoanalyst in Her Time, and Importantly, for Ours.” Drawing from experience with her first psychoanalytic supervisor, the paper explores the power of a rich supervisory relationship and informs a supervisor’s capacity and zest to foster innovative, “outside-the-box” thinking. While the paper focuses on experience with a clinical supervisor, the workshop teaches skills and mindsets beneficial in other leadership roles and professional relationships.

Participants will be invited to:

• Reflect on how to engage with others in ways that sustain what is working well in a professional relationship, while also deepening curiosity and openness.
• Consider emotional reactions to clinical care and supervision as signals for learning and growth.

The workshop will include a paper presentation, followed by breakout discussions. Dinner will be provided. Register online by August 24, 2026.

Holmes is widely published and has served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA). She was also a recipient of the JAPA Prize (2021), the Sigourney Award (2022) and the Hans W. Loewald Memorial Award (2025). She lives and works in Bluffton, South Carolina.
