DESCRIPTION:Session Description Algorithms encode the biases of their crea
tors\, and also the biases of society in general. How do we confront this
reality and simultaneously harness the enormous possibilities of AI? How
can we hold algorithms accountable? In this talk\, New York University P
rofessor Meredith Broussard will explore how technologies designed to boo
st convenience are also prone to perpetuating bias. From sensors trained
only to recognize lighter skin tones and the dangerous feedback loops tha
t arise when medical diagnostic algorithms are fed on discriminatory data
\, real-world bias always emerges inside technological systems. The learn
ing objectives for this session are to help attendees think through ways
that technology may reproduce inequality in medicine and understand novel
strategies for addressing persistent social problems. Continuing Educati
on This session is approved for Continuing Education Credit (CEC) by the
National Association of Social Workers\, CT and meets the continuing educ
ation criteria for Social Work\, Marriage & Family Therapist\, Profession
al Counselor\, and Licensed Psychologist Licensure renewal. Additional in
formation and instructions for earning CEC for this session will be provi
ded at the live event. YCSC Grand Rounds are reviewed for eligibility for
Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits on an annual basis and most l
ecture-style sessions are approved for the year. Yale School of Medicine
is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Educati
on (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Indivi
dual event designation details are provided at applicable live events. YC
SC Grand Rounds sessions are typically presented in the Cohen Auditorium
at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays from September through June\, with a live stream
available via Zoom. Internal participants are encouraged to attend sessi
ons in person. Recordings are posted on-line as soon as they are availabl
