DESCRIPTION:Session Description In this talk\, Greg J\, Duncan\, PhD\, wil
l address reports of developmental differences between children growing u
p in poverty and their higher-income peers\, and the lack of clarity arou
nd the causal role of income on children’s development. To study this\, t
he "Baby’s First Years" randomized control trial provided families with m
onthly unconditional cash transfers. One thousand racially and ethnically
diverse mothers with incomes below the U.S. federal poverty line were re
cruited from postpartum wards in 2018-19\, and randomized to receive eith
er $333/month or $20/month for the first several years of their children’
s lives. After the first four years of the intervention (n=891)\, the stu
dy found no discernible group differences on nine measures of children's
cognitive development\, socioemotional behaviors\, and health. Possible e
xplanations for these results and their implications will be discussed.\n

DESCRIPTION:This presentation will review strategies for reducing mental h
ealth stigma among youth\, focusing on brief human connection videos in w
hich individuals share their stories with openness and emotional clarity.
Drawing on recent studies that develop\, test\, and refine short persona
l narratives\, the talk will show how carefully crafted videos—balancing
 honesty\, emotion\, and hope—can foster identification\, reduce stigma\,
and encourage help-seeking. Evidence from multiple trials with adolescent
s and young adults will be summarized\, along with insights into what mak
es these videos effective and how they can be scaled for diverse audience
 s. The presentation will conclude with implications for wide-reaching\, c

DESCRIPTION:Sociopolitical values play an important and often under-examin

with the noble goal of improving care for populations that have been marg
inalized due to race\, gender\, sexual orientation\, nationality\, and ot
her causes—but unfortunately socio-political values have often been overl

DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlyi

gun to identify neural populations that are selectively engaged during ca

s integrate sensory cues from the caregiver with hypothalamic and limbic
systems that regulate emotional state\, physiological homeostasis\, and l
earning. The presenter will discuss how modern neuroscience approaches—in
cluding whole-brain activity mapping\, circuit tracing\, and targeted neu

DESCRIPTION:Save the date for Yale Child Study Center's fifth annual Junet
eenth celebration\, hosted by the department's Grand Rounds committee and
likely be held in the courtyard at 230 South Frontage Road (with the Coh
en Auditorium as the rain location) again this year\, with additional det
ails to be announced in the spring. Established in 2022 by Krystal Finch\
 , PhD\; Belinda Oliver\, MS\; Camille Cooper\, PhD\; Stacey Cannon\, BS\;
and Tara Davila\, LCSW\; to mark the end of the department's Grand Round
s season\, this event won the hearts of YCSC community members. It has hi
storically been kicked off with remarks by YSM Deputy Dean for Collaborat
ive Excellence Latimore\, MD\, and is primarily a social event with raffl
es and refreshments. Attendees are welcome to bring a folding chair to si
t and connect with colleagues while listening to music and enjoying some
locally sourced treats. Continuing education credit is not available for
this session. Opportunities to learn from the experiences of others are o
ffered to all in the Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) community throughout
each academic year. As in the past\, additional topic-based opportunities
to share or celebrate cultural or heritage experiences at select grand r
ounds and other sessions are announced throughout the academic year—and a
s always\, ideas and suggestions are welcomed from all in the YCSC commun
 ity.\n\nAdmission:\nFree\n\nDetails URL:\nhttps://medicine.yale.edu/event
