Child study Center Grand Rounds: Diagnosing Depression: Race, Medicine, and Melancholia in the Atlantic Slave Trade

Racial bias in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health is not typically understood from an historical prospective that predates the 20th century. However, slavery and the transatlantic slave trade represent crucial centuries in understanding how mental health became racialized and how African Americans have been subjected to inequitable treatment.
