Child Study Center Compassionate Care Rounds: Refractory: providers and systems come together to care for a severely depressed and suicidal youth
The rates of depression in youth between the ages of 3-17 is estimated to be 3.2% and suicide remains the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents and young adults. During the pandemic, the rates of children and adolescents admitted to the Yale Children’s Hospital Services for treatment of severe forms of depression and suicide attempts has grown substantially. The complex needs of these patients has placed a great strain on the health care system. This Compassionate Care Rounds provides a case example of a multidisciplinary, coordinated model of psychiatric care for children with severe forms of depression.
