Yale Child Study Center offers a variety of virtual and in-person mental health and wellness workshops for school personnel, communities, or parents and families through the center’s satellite location in Westport, Connecticut (YCSC Westport). Presentations can be adapted and individualized based on the needs of the setting or participants. Promoting Executive Functioning Skills in Students

What can teachers do to maximize learning and foster self-regulation in the classroom? This workshop focuses on promoting the development of crucial skills including self-awareness, emotional regulation, time management, planning, organization, goal setting, and persistence, which helps students manage their behavior and improves academic outcomes. Key learning objectives for this session are for participants to:

  • Understand the components of executive functioning and the impact on academic success
  • Identify strategies to improve self-awareness, emotional regulation, time management, planning, organization, goal setting, and persistence in the classroom
  • Apply the skills learned in this workshop to meet the needs of a specific student or classroom

Evidence-Based Strategies to Support Students with Anxiety

Anxiety can have a significant impact on children’s participation and performance in the classroom, and educators are often tasked with juggling students’ academic and emotional needs to help them succeed. This workshop will provide teachers and other school personnel with the background knowledge and practical strategies needed to effectively manage students’ anxiety in the school setting. Key learning objectives for this session are for participants to:

  • Understand factors that contribute to childhood anxiety
  • Identify school-based supports that will improve the functioning of students with anxiety
  • Utilize best practices for partnering with families to support children with anxiety

The Role of Schools in Promoting Students’ Mental Health

In recent years, the mental health needs of children and adolescents have increased exponentially. In this workshop, educators will learn proactive strategies they can implement to improve students’ mental wellness and prevent emotional and behavioral difficulties. Key learning objectives for this session are for participants to:

  • Identify school-wide strategies and structures that create an environment supportive of students’ emotional wellbeing
  • Increase awareness of ways to promote a sense of safety and belonging in the classroom
  • Indicate at least two actions to take that can be implemented immediately in your classroom or school

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: An Overview

Given the prevalence of ADHD, it has become a central concern in the child mental health landscape. This workshop offers a clear and practical overview of ADHD in children and adolescents, while also exploring evidence-based strategies to support children more effectively at home and in school. Key learning objectives for this session are for participants to:

  • Understand the current landscape of ADHD in children and adolescents
  • Describe the impact of ADHD on children’s academic, behavioral, and social emotional functioning
  • Identify evidence-based treatment options for ADHD, including behavioral interventions and medication

The Athlete Mindset: Supporting the Wellness of Student Athletes

Student athletes today are growing up in a high-pressure sports culture, where the drive to excel can sometimes outpace their physical and emotional readiness. This workshop explores the unique mental and emotional challenges young athletes face and offers practical, evidence-based strategies to foster resilience, balance, and confidence—both on and off the field. Key learning objectives for this session are for participants to:

  • Understand the pressures, stressors, and emotional experiences of student-athletes
  • Learn to identify when stress, anxiety, or perfectionism may be negatively impacting student-athletes
  • Discover practical ways to help student-athletes develop coping skills, confidence, and a growth mindset
  • Learn how to encourage student-athletes to explore interests beyond sports and develop a well-rounded sense of self

YCSC Westport

In addition to offering training and consultation sessions for schools and communities in a variety of settings, YCSC Westport provides evidence-based mental health treatments, diagnostic and psychiatric evaluations, and medication management for children birth to 18.
