Our Community Partnership Projects

YCEI is engaged in multiple projects within our community, including Emotion Revolution, inspirED, and Making CT the First Emotionally Intelligent State.

Emotion Revolution


In 2017, we launched and completed the Emotion Revolution for Educators, a joint initiative between the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and New Teacher Center to build awareness around the critical role of emotions in teaching, learning, and educator well-being and effectiveness.


In schools, educators are the single most important factor for students’ success. Yet, not enough is known about the emotions educators experience each day. We want to provide educators with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to enhance their wellness and effectiveness. To this end, we created an anonymous online survey that asked educators to take 20 minutes to share how they currently feel in school, how they want to feel, and what they need to bridge the gap between the two. We are currently utilizing these data to create more effective tools for educators and their students.

Looking Forward

We are continuing to generate tools and reports from the Emotion Revolution for Educators project to enhance teacher well-being and school climate. Together, we can advance our understanding about what educators today need, and how we can help them reach their maximum potential.


In 2015, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Born This Way Foundation--created by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta--hosted the Emotion Revolution Summit. This initiative focused on building awareness around the critical role emotions play in young people’s learning, decision-making, academic achievement, and overall wellness. The Summit featured panel discussions, workshops, and remarks by advocates, educators, nearly 200 visiting youth from around the country, as well as Lady Gaga herself.

The event provided a platform for youth participants to share their ideas for creating improved learning environments through workshops and panel discussions. Throughout the day, Lady Gaga encouraged the youth attendants to take their own mental and emotional health seriously and to proactively seek the tools they need to foster wellbeing. She called on participants to join the conversation around why emotions matter through the #IAmNotJust hashtag on Social Media.
“We want to explode the conversation around youth mental health so that it’s not seen as a fringe issue anymore,” said Lady Gaga. “Today is a lot bigger than just one event or some social media campaign. It’s the beginning of making the emotional – as well as physical – wellbeing of young people a national issue.”

Dr. Marc Brackett, Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, unveiled the results of an unprecedented online survey of 22,000 high school-age youth. The survey explored how young people currently feel and how they want to feel in school, and the possible reasons for these emotions. Dr. Brackett’s presentation slides are available for download. Here are some of the highlights of the research:

  • When asked how they currently feel in school, approximately 75% of all words were negative. The most common words these students used to describe their current emotions at school are “tired” (39%), “stressed” (29%), and “bored” (26%).
  • When asked how they WANT to feel in school, the top three emotions that students want to experience more of are “happy,” “energized,” and “excited.”
  • Students who reported that their peers had been mean and cruel to them also reported feeling greater levels of loneliness, fear, and hopelessness. Students who believed what they were learning was relevant and meaningful to their lives – and reported they had teachers who deliver engaging lessons – experienced more positive emotions in school like interest, respect, and happiness.

Facebook also had a major presence at the event. They launched inspirED —a resource center for high school students and educators born out of a partnership between Facebook and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Designed by educators, teens, and experts in social and emotional learning (SEL), inspirED is a tool to help high school students and educators work together to create the best possible learning communities. Overall, the #EmotionRevolution generated more than 618 million social media impressions worldwide, with the #IAmNotJust hashtag trending globally. The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and the Faas Foundation are partnering in a groundbreaking study to define how workplace culture affects employee health and psychological well-being called the Emotion Revolution in the Workplace.


Current measures of workplace culture are woefully lacking. Far too often bullying and unhealthy hierarchies are ingrained in organizations, making them invisible to human resources and employees struggling to fulfill their own potential. Longstanding metrics, such as the 360 Assessment, employee surveys, and performance management systems are outdated and do little or nothing to gauge the mood of employees. What do people feel at work? Why does this matter for individual well-being and important work outcomes? To address these questions, the project team conducted large scale nationally representative surveys of the U.S. workforce. These broad economy-wide surveys are to be followed by in depth studies within specific organizations in the healthcare industry.

The questions examined include:

  • What is the nature of passion at work (and why does it matter)?
  • What are gender and power differences in how people feel at work? What impact do these differences have?
  • How does emotionally intelligent behavior of supervisors create an emotional climate and predict creativity and innovation of employees?
  • What are the patterns of engagement and burnout at work? Who are the workers most likely to be engaged, burned out, and both engaged and exhausted? What demands and resources predict patterns of engagement and burnout, and what outcomes are associated with these patterns?
  • What does it mean to be an emotionally intelligent organization?

Looking Forward

Findings on how employees feel about work and why will help to identify what motivates them to contribute to their maximum potential, as well as factors that restrict or restrain them. With this data, along with input from representatives of participating organizations, the Emotion Revolution in the Workplace will develop quantifiable, evidence-based solutions to help organizations reduce unnecessary stress factors; share best practices about the factors that motivate employees and connect employees with the emotional tools they need to reach their maximum potential. The study will give employees a voice as well as help us develop quantifiable, evidence-based solutions to reduce stress, share best practices and help workers reach their maximum potential.


inspirED is a platform designed to empower all young people to create positive change in their school and communities. inspirED provides a set of free, online resources to help students form teams at their school, measure their school climate, identify potential projects they can do, make real lasting change to their school community, and celebrate their successes. inspirED was born out of a collaboration between Facebook and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence with the goal of bringing social and emotional learning (SEL) and greater well-being to high school students across the nation. inspirED began with a survey of over 22,000 high school students from all over the United States. Students were asked how they feel in school every day, and how they want to feel.

The top 3 emotions students reported feeling were tired, stressed, and bored.

In contrast, when asked how they wanted to feel in school, they answered: Happy, excited, energized, motivated, passionate, purposeful, safe, comfortable, contented, balanced, respected, valued, connected, supported, empowered, and inspired. inspirED empowers students to bridge the gap between how they feel in school every day and how they want to feel.

Making CT the First Emotionally Intelligent State

The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence is helping guide Connecticut on its path to being the first emotionally intelligent state. Thanks to funding from the Dalio Foundation, teachers and leaders across the state are addressing the imperative to engage Connecticut students emotionally in order to connect with them intellectually. Based on Dr. Marc Brackett’s research at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, the RULER approach to social and emotional learning is being implemented in hundreds of Connecticut schools.

In addition to an annual training institute for district leaders, the Center offers training through the RULER Institute, providing training, support, and materials to educators as they work to implement RULER in Connecticut schools. These workshops are offered each year in the fall, spring, and summer. The Center has recently established a relationship with partner schools, which include eight sites that aspire to become RULER exemplars throughout the state.

Further, 34 educators from Connecticut were selected as Changemaker Fellows. The goal of the Fellowship program is to empower and challenge teachers and administrators to design concrete actions to move emotional intelligence work to the next level in their schools and communities. Going forward, the Center’s plan is to continue the dialogue regarding SEL statewide by expanding and reconvening the SEL Task Force focused on advocacy and policy outreach. Educators and school districts throughout Connecticut are invited to partner with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence as we position Connecticut at the forefront in the field of social and emotional learning.
