Pamela Kunz, MD on 1999 Simone’s Maxims

September 27, 2022

Pamela Kunz, MD, associate professor (medical oncology) and vice chief of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (medical oncology) writes that, “I distinctly remember being told by mentors to read the original 1999 Simone’s Maxims – as these maxims were put on a pedestal as the truths of how to navigate academic medicine.”

She, along with her co-authors who are oncology colleagues from nine other institutions, sought to update these maxims for a “modern, diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace - an aspirational workplace.” The result is an article in the Journal of Clinical Oncology titled, “Understanding Modern Medical Centers: Beyond Simone—Intersectional Maxims for a New Era.”

Using an intersectional approach, the introduction of the article states that they will update Simone’s Maxims, “reflective of the unique challenges and opportunities that have arisen in the intervening two decades.”
