CBIT established several formal courses at Yale that are popular among students interested in biomedical and healthcare innovation. Medical Device Design (MENG/BENG 404) pairs physician mentors from the Yale School of Medicine with student teams from various undergraduate disciplines (both engineering and non-engineering) to prototype innovative solutions to the problems posed by the physicians. Lectures cover topics such as engineering design, medical device development, regulatory affairs, business strategy and marketing, intellectual property, etc. and are given by Yale faculty as well as industry representatives. Medical Software Design (BENG 406) offers those with a strong programming background insight into software design and implementation for medical applications, with emphasis on how new ideas can be developed within today's healthcare regulatory environment. It focuses on the interaction of medical imaging and 3D printing. Topics include the methods and design principles to take 3D medical images, and how to image analysis algorithms to create 3D models to guide diagnosis and interventional procedures or build patient-specific medical devices. Creating Healthcare Ventures (MGMT/MD 657) gives students a broad understanding of major new opportunities in healthcare and medicine. Students will develop an understanding of the canonical path to commercialization, including the following key questions in building healthcare and life sciences ventures: How does one clearly define the unmet clinical needs and understand the patient journey under the current standard of care? Who are the stakeholders that must be understood to define a product opportunity? Who is the customer/economic buyer and what are their user personas? What does a successful business model look like that addresses the buyer and other stakeholders? How can a successful interdisciplinary team be built and supported?
