The Yale Medicine Distinguished Clinical Career Award honors physicians who have contributed to Yale Medicine for at least 20 years since completing their fellowship training and whose careers are marked by significant accomplishments, exemplary dedication, and important contributions to advancing the practice, the overall medical profession, and the community. The award is intended to honor faculty members who are widely recognized as distinguished clinicians and who have devoted the main part of their careers to Yale.

Pei Hui, MD, PhD, is a professor of pathology and of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), where he serves as director of Gynecologic Pathology, clinical director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratories, and founding director of the Center for the Precision Medicine of Trophoblastic Disease.
With more than two decades at Yale, Dr. Hui is a pathologist who specializes in gynecological diseases and cancers, including cervical, endometrial, ovarian, and fallopian tube cancers, and he has earned recognition as one of the most influential clinician-scholars in gynecologic pathology nationally and internationally.
A leading authority in gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), Dr. Hui has been a driving force in integrating molecular diagnostics, most notably short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping, into routine clinical pathology practice, fundamentally improving diagnostic accuracy and positioning Yale at the forefront of precision medicine in pathology.
Dr. Hui has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, textbooks, and book chapters, and serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including Modern Pathology, Human Pathology, and Virchows Archiv.
He currently serves as president of the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists (ISGyP) and as a member of the board of directors of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP). He has also served as an expert editorial board member for multiple editions of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of Female Reproductive Organs, directly shaping diagnostic standards worldwide.
As an educator, Dr. Hui serves as director of the faculty mentoring program in the Department of Pathology and has directed fellowship programs. His dedication to teaching has been recognized with the Averill A. Liebow Award for excellence in pathology resident education.
His nominator, Chen Liu, MD, PhD, Anthony N. Brady Professor and chair of pathology at YSM, and chief of pathology at Yale New Haven Hospital, noted, “His career reflects the very essence of a ‘Hall of Fame’ clinician, defined by excellence in patient care, transformative innovation, global leadership, and enduring institutional impact.”
Dr. Hui earned his medical degree from Xi’an Jiao Tong University and a doctor of philosophy degree in molecular pharmacology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed his pathology residency at Yale New Haven Hospital and a fellowship in oncological pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
