Making Medical AI Smarter and Safer

Qingyu Chen, PhD, and his team set out to study how artificial intelligence (AI) language models are adapted for medicine and found that what these models memorize can be both useful and risky. A model may retain valuable medical knowledge, but in a controlled study using real hospital records, the same fine-tuning—the added training that adapts a model to a specific task—that improved diagnostic performance also made it more likely to reproduce material it had seen during training, including sensitive patient information.

The new AI model Oncoformer can predict whether patients are likely to develop cancer within the next year, diagnose existing tumors, forecast responses to treatments, and stage tumors. The model makes conclusions and predictions from electronic health records and chest X-rays. Trained and tested with information from Chinese patients, the model also delivered accurate results for a cohort of patients in the UK.

Older adults with type 2 diabetes face a difficult trade-off: they are among the most vulnerable to medication-related harms yet are often underrepresented in the clinical trials that guide treatment decisions. A new study led by Yuan Lu, ScD, helps address this gap by providing large-scale, real-world evidence on the safety of commonly used diabetes medications.

Using AI to Guide AI

Since arriving at Yale School of Medicine in 2019 as an internal medicine resident, Evangelos Oikonomou, MD, DPhil—now an assistant professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine)—has focused his research on developing artificial intelligence (AI) applications that can interpret traditional, routine cardiac tests to better assist providers in diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. In a new paper published in NEJM AI, Oikonomou, together with Rohan Khera, MD, MS and their colleagues from the Yale Cardiovascular Data Science (CarDS) Lab, shared a new AI-enabled clinical decision support tool, TARGET-AI, designed to help clinicians and their larger health systems use AI more effectively.

Yale Review: Bidirectional Intimate Partner Violence Among Service Members and Veterans

A Yale study in Trauma, Violence & Abuse reveals veterans may experience bidirectional intimate partner violence at higher rates than active-duty service members. “Results from this study suggest that veterans may have higher rates of bidirectional intimate partner violence than their service member counterparts, although this finding should be interpreted with caution, given differences in measurement and sampling across studies,” said Elizabeth Coppola, PhD, the paper's first author.
