Yale BIDS Enhances Research with Comprehensive Data and Service Through YBIC

April 25, 2025

Yale Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) is advancing biomedical research at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System through Yale Biomedical Informatics and Computing (YBIC). Led by distinguished faculty, YBIC provides researchers with essential access to data, specialized services, and high-performance computing resources to support diverse studies.

YBIC is guided by key BIDS faculty, including:

  • Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, MBA, PhD – Waldemar von Zedtwitz Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics and Data Science; Deputy Dean for Biomedical Informatics; Chair, Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science.
  • Hua Xu, PhD – Robert T. McCluskey Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science; Vice Chair for Research and Development, Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science; Assistant Dean for Biomedical Informatics, Yale School of Medicine.
  • Daniella Meeker, PhD – Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science; Chief Research Information Officer, Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System.

YBIC offers researchers with centralized access to large-scale comprehensive data resources to support and enhance their studies:

  • MarketScan – A dataset providing detailed healthcare service information for analyzing treatment patterns, costs, and outcomes.
  • YNHHS Data Extracts – Real-world clinical data from Yale New Haven Health System to support research studies.
  • Cosmos – A network of de-identified patient records from multiple health systems, enabling large-scale observational research and comparative effectiveness studies.

To streamline access, YBIC is developing a ServiceNow portal, which will allow researchers to request on-call support for trainings through a single, efficient system.

YBIC also facilitates specialized research services designed to accelerate research and optimize data utilization. The Research Informatics Office (RIO), led by Daniella Meeker, oversees research data warehousing, curation, and transformation. RIO provides essential support for clinical research applications and regulatory compliance. Additionally, it offers data services tailored to research administrators, teams, and library users, facilitating seamless access to valuable datasets. To further advance quality improvement and learning health systems (LHS), RIO delivers translational research services that bridge the gap between data insights and practical healthcare advancements.

In partnership with Yale Health Sciences IT (HSIT) and Yale New Haven Health System, YBIC provides cutting-edge high-performance computing resources that empower the Yale research community, offering the latest tools and streamlined support to accelerate innovation and discoveries in clinical and translational research.
