Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, MBA, PhD, chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science and deputy dean for biomedical informatics at Yale School of Medicine, has been honored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). She has been named a co-recipient of the 2027 IEEE Innovation in Societal Infrastructure Award, one of IEEE's technical field awards.
Ohno-Machado, an IEEE senior member, shares the award with co-recipients IEEE fellow Jaideep Vaidya, PhD, professor and vice dean for faculty affairs and research at Rutgers University, and IEEE senior member Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD, chair of the Department of Health Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at UTHealth Houston.
In announcing the award, IEEE stated: "Vaidya, Ohno-Machado, and Jiang are recognized for leadership in designing and deploying privacy-preserving distributed clinical research infrastructures that enable secure, large-scale collaboration using health data."
The award, one of the IEEE Technical Field Awards to be recognized in 2027, includes a bronze medal, a certificate, and a shared $10,000 prize.
"It is an honor to receive this award from IEEE. It has a special meaning to me because it is shared with a former advisee and a dear colleague from computer science. Privacy-preserving data sharing is critical for the development of AI systems that help promote health and alleviate the burden of disease. I am glad IEEE recognizes this type of interdisciplinary work," says Ohno-Machado.
The award is sponsored by Hitachi Ltd. and the IEEE Computer Society.
