Scientific Interactions

All CMQBTP students are strongly encouraged to participate in the enormous variety of activities available on campus that immerse them in the current literature, afford opportunities to present their work and learn presentation skills, and foster a sense of community among graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. In addition to the regular group meetings that essentially all research groups hold, many hold joint meetings with other groups at which graduate students and postdocs present their own research. Many of these meetings are interdepartmental. We encourage active participation in these meeting and in the larger meetings listed below.

Departmental Retreats

All CMQBTP students attend at least one departmental retreat per year. We encourage students to present their work either in short talks or in poster format.

Each of the departments in the CMQBTP sponsors a weekly departmental seminar, usually featuring speakers from outside the University. These seminars are a very important supplement to course offerings. The BBS On-Line Calendar of Events, located at, advertises all seminars, research-in-progress talks, journal clubs, dissertation presentations, special seminars and meetings of interest to students in the biological and biomedical sciences.

Travel to Scientific Meetings

All CMQBTP students are encouraged to attend one meeting per year as presentation of their results to the wider scientific community is an important part of their development as a scientist. A small allowance from the CMQBTP partially supports the travel costs.
