c-subunit of the ATP synthase forms the mitochondrial permeability transition pore
Shown are a wild type and mutant c-subunit. The mutant c-subunit has a lower conductance and when expressed in neurons is able to protect the neurons from excitotoxic (glutamate toxicity-induced) cell death.

"Memory cell" ischemia
Delayed cell death in the CA1 neurons of the hippocampus: Fluoro-jade stains dying neurons.

Depolarized mitochondria in neurons
Depolarized mitochondria in neurons isolated from mice missing the gene for fragile X. The mitochondrial membrane potential was measured with TMRM.
