Dr. Laura Niklason elected to National Academy of Medicine
Dr. Laura Niklason, Professor Anesthesiology and Biomedical Engineering at Yale, was elected in October 2015 to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine (formerly termed the Institute of Medicine). Dr. Niklason is the Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology. Her. research focuses primarily on regenerative strategies for cardiovascular and lung tissues, and the impact of biomechanical and biochemical signals of tissue differentiation and development. She was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors in 2014.

A Yale scientist collaborated with researchers at Duke University and surgeons in Poland and the United States to create bioengineered blood vessels for kidney-disease patients on dialysis. The man-made vessels appeared to be both safe and more durable than commonly used synthetic versions, said the investigators.
