Humanities in Medicine / Howard Spiro Lecture Series: "The Dillard Lecture: Saving Lives While Saving the Planet: A Replicative Model of Sustainability in Health Care in Developing Nations"

You are cordially invited to The Dillard Lecture to be delivered by Kathleen White, MD, Physician/Environmentalist, Yale University; Site Director, ASRI Klinik, Sukadana, West Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia; Global Health Electives for Medical Students on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in the Anlyan Center Auditorium on 300 Cedar Street, room N-107 in New Haven.

The lecture is entitled: SAVING LIVES WHILE SAVING THE PLANET: A REPLICATIVE MODEL OF SUSTAINABILITY IN HEALTH CARE IN DEVELOPING NATIONS. At ASRI Klinik, in Borneo, Indonesia, the health and wellbeing of a population and its environment are uniquely linked. This site, established by YSM graduate Dr. Kinari Webb, represents the first replicative model for exchange of healthcare and a commitment to preserve the forest. But in addition to the successful re-foresting of the forest, the site has also become a venue for re-capturing the excitement of bedside medicine. With advances in technology, medical care in the developed world has become more fragmented and specialized. Yale and many other medical schools are attempting to counter that trend. Learning Theory is being actively utilized in providing patient-centered interdisciplinary care and clinical reasoning early in medical school.

In this Dillard Lecture, Dr. Kathleen White will share with the audience her experiences in patient-centered care as they have occurred in the Wednesday Evening Clinic and at ASRI. She will emphasize the important role of Anthropology, Economics and Environmental Ethics in Health Care. You will learn how this “conceit” of saving lives while saving the planet has tremendous benefits for us all.

Please join us to hear their stories.

We hope you are able to attend and please bring your friends and colleagues.
