COVID Gap Funding

During the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty investigators were forced to pause their research programs resulting in delays in conducting experiments and studies that lead to publication or provide preliminary data for grants. Extension of the tenure or term clock where applicable is a first step to compensating for this interruption. Mentorship and increased attention to career development will be critical to enabling investigators to get back on track. Lastly, gap funding is needed to offset continued expenses during a period of decreased research productivity.

The purpose of this RFP for COVID supplemental funding is to provide a mechanism of funding support for research-focused faculty whose work was delayed due to COVID-19.

The Dean’s office will provide $30,000 in research funds to supplement current start-up and early career funding for eligible faculty as defined below. This funding will be matched by $20,000 to $30,000 from the faculty member’s department. Departments will convene a mentorship committee or studio to review the career plans of the faculty member and to outline plans for the next year. The application must include the minutes of this meeting, documentation of the department’s commitment to match funds and documentation of protected time for research. The faculty member should apply for NIH continuity supplements NOT-OD-20-054 or NOT-OD-20-055 if they are eligible. NIH funding through these mechanisms may serve in lieu of the departmental contribution.
