Gordon Shen, Ethiopia

Fellowship site: Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Research interest: Hospital management, health system strengthening, mental health, organization theory.

As a GHES fellow, Gordon will spend his year at Addis Ababa working under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth Bradley (Yale School of Public Health) and Getnet Mitike (Addis Ababa University). Collaborating with colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic, his research will deepen the understanding of the Ethiopian Hospital Alliance for Quality and National Health Extension Program. The former study seeks to examine the relationship between hospitals' participation in a quality alliance and their performance, as mediated by continuous quality improvement adoption. The latter is a time and motion study which measures the extent to which health extension workers improve patient access to health services.

Gordon is a doctoral candidate in the Health Services and Policy Analysis Ph.D. program at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his M.Sc. in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. He was based in Beijing from 2012-2013 as a Fulbright-Fogarty Fellow in Public Health. He has research and consulting experience from work in the United States, China, Palestine, Romania and India.
