My research spans the fields of bioethics, public health ethics, and environmental ethics.

Extensive Research Description

I expect three new books to be published in 2012-13. (1) The Bioethics of Dying: Toward a Moral Ecology of End of Life Care.(forthcoming from The Johns Hopkins University Press); (2) Ethical Guidance for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response: Highlighting Ethics and Values in a Vital Public Health Service. (Co-author: John Arras). (currently under review at Oxford University Press); and (3) Ethics Guidelines for Decision-Making About Life-Sustaining Treatment & Care Near the End of Life (co-authors Nancy Berlinger and Susan M. Wolf);(currently under review).

In addition, I am currently nearing completion on two other books. One is Civic Health: A Political Theory of Public Health and Health Policy, which is a book on the relationship between public health and political theory and the role of grassroots participation in health policy. The second is The Ordeal of Reminding: An Essay on Dementia and the Human Good, which is on self-identity, quality of life, and the ethics of care in the context of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Other long term projects include: a study of ecology, social justice, and reconciliation in the novels of Steinbeck, Patton, and Agee; and a study of the relationship between nature and culture in the social theories of Hobbes, Rousseau, Freud, and Lévi-Strauss.
