Career goal: Pursuing a position in hospital administration where I can contribute to providing high quality care and improving population health in a cost-effective manner.
Internship outline: As a planning and marketing intern at Bridgeport Hospital, I helped shape Connecticut’s and Bridgeport Hospital’s Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), enabling hospitals to maintain their nonprofit status, as mandated by the Affordable Care Act. I researched baseline community health data for Greater Bridgeport, while also collaborating closely with state-level stakeholders to develop a CHNA process and product tool to be recommended to all Connecticut hospitals and health departments.
Value of experience: I had the opportunity to collaborate with, learn from and contribute to the projects of senior staff, statewide stakeholders (the Connecticut Hospital Association and Connecticut Association of the Directors of Health), local stakeholders (health departments, federally qualified health centers and local health agencies), and hospital administration, physician, nurses and patient educators. Through my experiences, I was able to see first hand the opportunity hospital leaders have to positively impact patient care, which solidified my commitment to a career in hospital administration.
Best moment: The inspirational and dedicated people with whom I had the opportunity to work.
