Summer 2012 Internship Highlights

During the summer of 2012, 95 students embarked for places near and far to complete their M.P.H. internships in a wide range of governmental, non-profit and for profit organizations in local, state, national and international settings. Sixty-three percent of the 2012 internships were in various parts of the United States. Of these, 53 percent were in Connecticut. These summer interns contributed to many important public health projects in 2012 such as surveillance of food borne pathogens in CT; development and implementation of an assessment tool to collect data on the general health of households in areas where hydraulic fracturing is taking place in Pennsylvania; building the business case for healthier, lower calorie foods by demonstrating the financial benefits of modifying marketing practices; research on the delay of care by women with acute myocardial infarction; and a project to eliminate the practice of elective deliveries of babies before 39 weeks of gestation in Florida hospitals.

The remaining 37 percent of the 2012 summer internships were international placements in Africa, Asia Europe, South America, and other parts of North America . Global student interns were engaged in projects such as determining the prevalence of Staphylococcal colonization and its risk factors among swine workers in Romania; examining the association between ambient air pollution levels and fetal growth in Lanzhou, China; developing and implementing a strategic plan to address South Africa's high maternal mortality rate; and examining the social and structural determinants of the AIDS epidemic including drug use, social networks, migration and poverty in Malaysia.
