The HIV epidemic is rising faster in Russia than anywhere else in the world, with newly reported diagnoses almost doubling annually since 1998. The School of Public Health’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA) currently has more than 30 ongoing projects, 13 in Russia, focused on preventing the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, as well as preventing and controlling tuberculosis (TB). It has established a TB-AIDS Clinical and Training Unit in St. Petersburg to provide the proper tools, training, and economic resources to care for patients. CIRA also helped establish the first graduate M.P.H. program in public health in Russia at St. Petersburg State University in 2005. CIRA is engaged in multiple projects throughout the world, including projects in the United States, China, India, and Africa.
