Workshop on Cancer Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Workshop on Cancer Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Urumqi, Xingjiang Autonomous Region, China

This workshop was held to train urgently needed manpower in cancer epidemiology and biostatistics. China is facing increased cancer incidence and there is a severe lack of trained experts in prevention and control activities.  Under the support from China’s National Cancer Center, The Cancer Institute/Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Health Department of Zhengzhou City,  and the Zhengzhou University Cancer Hospital, a nation-wide “Workshop on Cancer Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Zhengzhou City” was held April 22-28, 2012. 

 

Faculty for the workshop from Yale School of Public Health included Professors Paul Cleary, Brian Leaderer, Theodore Holford, Tongzhang Zheng, Yong Zhu and Yawei Zhang.  From China, Chief of the Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control at Chinese Ministry of Health, Professors Min Dai (China’s Cancer Center), Professor Sheng Hongbing (Vice President of Nanjing University) and Professor Tangchun Wu (Dean of the Tongji School of Public Health, Huazhong University) and several other leading cancer experts also gave lectures in the workshop.  A total of 110 cancer epidemiologists and biostatisticians from all over China participated in the workshop.

Through the support of China’s National Cancer Center, The Cancer Institute/Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Health Department of Zhengzhou City,  and the Zhengzhou University Cancer Hospital, sponsored a nationwideWorkshop on Cancer Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Zhengzhou City in April 2012. A 2013 workshop was held in Urumqi and plans are in the works for 2014. Attendees have come from all parts of China.

Advisory committee meeting

An advisory committee meeting was held in Beijing to review the study protocol, and study instruments.  The experts from China’s universities and research institutions have given many valuable comments and suggestions on study design and how to field implementation of the study. 

Field Visits by Drs. Zheng and Boyle

In order to help solve the issues associated with the pilot studies in Daqing, and plan the next step for further development of the project of the Daqing Cohort Study, Drs. Zheng and Boyle visited study site in Daqing, and met with Dr. Zhao and other Steering Committee members at the Cancer Center in August 20-22. Details regarding the study design, study plan, and collaboration with the Daqing city were discussed at the meeting.

Progress Report Meeting in Establishing the Trainee-Oriented Research Project, Daqing Cohort Study

The Cancer Center Steering Committee members, including Drs. Zhao Pin and Min Dai, together with a delegate of 6 persons   from   Daqing   city   (including   the   Deputy   Mayor, Secretary General of the City, Chief of the Health Department of Daqing City, and the Deputy Director of Center for Disease Control of Daqing) traveled to Yale University between May 31 and June 7 to meet and work with the Yale Steering Committee members and faculty mentors at Yale. The Yale Steering Committee   members   and   faculty   mentors,   including   Drs. Tongzhang Zheng,  Theodore  Holford,  Brian  Leaderer,  and Yawei Zhang participated in the meeting. Also participating in the meeting were Dr. Peter Boyle, the President of International

One of the main purposes of the Yale meeting was to review the progress in implementing the goals set at the Beijing meeting for establishing the mentored trainee research project, the Daqing Cohort Study and incorporating the air pollution into the research program, and to discuss new research training activities.

Site Visit by Dr. Yvonne Njage

In order to know better about China's cancer training program, Dr. Yvonne Njage, the Project Office of the training program at Fogarty, paid a visit at the China Cancer Center after the Guangzhou meeting in early January, 2010. Dr. Zheng accompanied Dr. Njage for the visit. While at the Cancer Center, Dr. Zhao presented Cancer in China and the training program; Dr. Min Dai presented the basic study design for the Daqing cohort study. Drs. Njage and Zheng also interviewed the trainee candidates.

Launching Meeting of Fogarty Research Training Grant

The Yale Steering Committee members and faculty mentors, including Drs. Tongzhang Zheng, Theodore Holford, Brian Leaderer and Yawei Zhang from Yale University traveled to Beijing between November 9-12 to meet and work with the Cancer Center Steering Committee members and faculty mentors in Beijing. The Cancer Center Steering Committee members participated in the meeting included Drs. Zhao, Min Dai, Zou Xiaonong and Zhan Qimin.

Dr. Roger Glass, Director of the Fogarty International Center, participated in the meeting and gave a speech about the Fogarty training program and its goals. Dr. Ann Hsing representing National Cancer Institute also participated in the meeting. The Beijing meeting had the following purposes: 1) To formally launch the training program; 2) To review the goals of the training program; 3) To discuss the strategies and plans to implement the training program; 4) To discuss the research activities related to the training program; 5) To discuss the plan to design a cohort study focusing on adult exposure and cancer risk; and 6) To set priority areas for selection of trainees.
