Dr. Attardo's research focuses upon the reproductive biology of insect vectors of human disease. His work has covered molecular mechanisms of how blood feeding activates reproduction in the Yellow Fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti). Currently, in the Aksoy lab, his work focuses on characterizing the reproductive processes of the viviparous Tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans morsitans). The vector of Human African Trypanosomiasis and Nagana in subsaharan Africa. This work targets multiple aspects of reproduction in tsetse including characterization and regulation of lactation in female flies, the essential link between symbiotic bacteria and female reproduction and the role of male seminal products in reproduction. These studies utilize a variety of approaches including comparative genomics, bioinformatics, high-throughput sequencing as well as traditional molecular wet lab techniques.

  • Capacity Building in Kenya Nairobi, Kenya (2015 - 2015)

    I will be leading a workshop on comparative genomic analysis of tsetse flies in March of 2015. The purpose of this workshop is to build scientific capacity in Kenya and provide training and experience in bioinformatic analysis and tsetse fly biology.
